Julie is a founding member of Artists of the Valley and an exhibiting member of Gorman's Art Gallery in Casterton. Self-taught with over 35 years of experience, Julie exhibits across Australia and has loyal collectors worldwide, selling work like her "Grampians Bush" piece.

A 'no rhyme or reason' approach to her craft and a talent with a range of mediums sees a true 'variety is the spice of life' joy in Julie Kent's artwork.​

From fabulous creations as a child with a dusty driveway as her canvas and a dry twig as her brush, to all-covered canvases on the walls of prestigious galleries and art shows, Julie is now
showcasing some of her fabulous work at Fou de toi, as our inaugural resident artist.​​

Julie, when and where did your interest in art begin and how did you develop your craft?​
From a very young age in Casterton, I was drawing with charcoal on a shed wall and with sticks on our dirt road.​
The passion and the journey has been a constant in my life, since an introduction to painting in 1984, over 40 years ago.​

What is your preferred/primary media and is there a 'theme' to your work?​
My preferred mediums are watercolour, oil, acrylic and pastel. There are no particular themes, no rhyme or reason. Inspiration is spontaneous, from anywhere in nature (plein air) or in my
studio. I feel it's quit subconscious.​

You're a member of 'Artists of the Valley'. What attracted you to this community of artists?​
The cameraderie. It's an amazing, vital place for artists to meet and showcase their art/creations. Also to meet and welcome the public and share the passion.​

Note: The Artists of the Valley has a growing membership of artists who live in Casterton and surrounding districts. Individuals work within a range of mediums, including acrylics, oils, watercolours, printmaking, and glass. The group meets in Sandford on the last Sunday of each month and warmly welcomes new members from the area.​

What are some of the achievements in your work, of which you are most proud?​
I have won many awards since I started painting all those years go in regional Victoria and South Australia and it is an honour to be judged a winner. The prize at the annual Penola Poets Festival which is held each May, was a particular thrill. It is a painting depicting poetry by John Shaw Neilson.​

Which artist, (living or passed) would you most like to discuss your work with and why?​
One of the many artists I admire is Dagny Strand from Penola. I enjoy talking and sharing with anyone who is an artist or an art lover.​

Footnote: Julie's least liked part of being an artist, is talking about herself and her art!​
